Automated reading of driver licences

When you upload photos of your driver licence through our online Qualifier, we use an artificial intelligence service provided by OpenAI to read the details on your licence (such as your name, address, licence number, class, state and expiry date) so you do not have to type them in. The photos are sent securely to OpenAI for this purpose only. OpenAI processes the photos in the United States and may retain them for a limited period (generally up to 30 days) for security and abuse monitoring, after which they are deleted. OpenAI does not use this information to train its AI models. You are shown the details read from your licence and can correct them before submitting. Your licence photos are stored securely in our own systems and are only accessible to authorised Coveryou staff.

We keep your licence photos and details for as long as we need them to manage your hire and your claim, and at least until your claim is closed or settled and paid. This is because we may need to provide a copy of your licence to the at-fault driver's insurer, their representatives or our legal representatives as proof of your identity and eligibility when recovering the hire costs. Once they are no longer needed for your claim or for our legal and record-keeping obligations, we securely destroy or de-identify them.
